BLANKETS they can get wet and freeze. In barns blankets work fine away from elements

Adding protection from weather a flap over doorway and lots of straw in a pen with area large enough to hide in corner is perfect to keep piggy warm. Heat lamps are not needed as they can cause fires when not installed correctly. We have several suggestions under menu if you want to add one to an area.

Alfalfa- not ideal since it is high in calories and has 14% protein. Good for a pig needing to gain some weight

Teff- has calcium and iron

Bermuda & Timothy are healthy choices for your pig

HAY- Forages such as grass or hay should be available all the time. Grass and hay promote digestion. If your pig has never eaten hay before, you can encourage them to eat it by wetting hay with a splash of 100% juice. If it rains and hay get wet remove and add fresh

Mud holes

They tend to turn green (algae) from direct sun. Covering pit with tarp will prevent this if able. If you cannot cover the area clean it with cider vinegar, or bleach to kill fungus. Sprinkling DE will not work as the water will break it down

INDOOR PEN IDEAS

INDOOR AREAS- need to be secured to a wall or floor especially when pig is small as they will lift and shove pen area around. Pigs can also jump over gates, pen areas and onto couches, tables and other areas they think they can find food. Indoor area will need a bed area, potty area away from bed, secure water bowl, toys, radio or tv and blankets in bed area and in area on a floor so pig has a choice. Pigs when young and are in the process of training will normally end up sleeping in potty box. When this happens clean out potty box and make it bed area adding a different potty box or pool to area.

Pigs normally will not potty where they eat yet some will. When this happens especially during the potty-training stage, set the feed in one room and potty in another. Placing a potty box around the home in different area to encourage potty time will make it easier for pig to access a place to go. When pig has accident do not place food in area. Take the pig from the area where he went potty and bring to safe potty space and praise. Covering potty up with food confuses pig thinking its ok to pee where i eat. If piggy decides he wants to sleep in his potty box give him one for sleeping with lots of blankets and another for potty time.

Bedtime ideas- should also be implemented from the start as a baby or when pig was adopted set routine for bed like you have set for the daytime

CRATING- when crating at night add lots of blankets, soft music and cover crate with light blanket and have a nite routine(singing, reading, words)

Closet set-up– removing the door and adding a curtain, blankets and decorating for piggy. Consider corrugated metal to walls if pig is a chewer. Some pigs eat drywall and are lacking a mineral in their diet yet Gypsum and other compounds in drywall are not considered toxic they can still cause tummy issues. Adding corrugated metal would prevent this, pickets or wood will prevent this issue
