Potty Time

Pigs will pee and poop in their swimming pools, during bath time and in the car. Pigs go potty in their outdoor pool since it is a natural behavior in the wild to cover up their smell from predators

Pigs are easy to train. If training indoors use a pool, tub, plastic crate, pan cut down edge to make it easier to get into. Add either a dog pad, shavings or equine pellets or cat litter made from recycled paper) If using pellets lightly moisten so won’t hurt their hoofs. After pig eats, sleeps, plays place in box and say “potty”. Repeat. Once goes praise can give treat but not near potty box so pig doesn’t expect a treat for going potty. Shallow box with edge cut down and smoothed off roughness. If pig has accidents thru out the home wipe up with toweling and place in potty box. Pigs can’t hold urine till almost a year old. NEVER PUNISH PIG< HIT PIG OR SHOVE SNOUT INTO URINE. Adding a potty box to rooms pig is allowed during training can be a time saver when it comes to accidents. Placing food as some will say to area works for some also but others could care a less if potty in spot his food is at. Using odaban, vinegar, baking soda and dash of mint will help in removing odors. If potty training outside, take outside after eating, sleep and play. Praise. Hanging a bell at door and ringing every time we go potty will train him to do the same. Doggie doors are also good for pigrens for easy access. Following dogs out to go potty is also an easy training tip as they will follow. (NOTE PIGS AND DOGS WILL NEED SUPERVISION ALWAYS AS THEY SPEAK DIFFERENT LANGUAGES)

When piggy is in the potty-training stage, not fixed or even revenge potty during that time adding several potty boxes helps keep the messes to a minimum. Revenge pee, uti’s will have to retrain piggy to go potty where he is expected once again. Pigs at 4 or 5 years old even have to retrained when an issue arises forgetting all they know. lol

PIGS WHO FORGOT WHERE TO POTTY

If your pig has forgot where to potty it could be one of the following

  1. Not fixed or spayed. Pigs not fixed will mark their areas, going everywhere to catch a mate’s attention
  2. Is the potty box to small? If box is too small and pig has a hard time turning or gets stuck it’s time to get another box. (Pools work best for growing indoor potty boxes)
  3. Has his room changed; placement of his box moved? different litter? Any changes can make pig have revenge pee since he/she is mad
  4. Some pigs when they grow up decide it’s time to go outside and potty and even live as it’s a natural climate for them. Hanging a bell for them to ring or having a dog door will make it easier for them and make less mess for mom to clean up
  5. Does pig have a temp? Any changes in eating habits? Drinking? Sleeping? More Lethargic? Straining to potty? Contact vet for advice

Carpet- urine in carpet most will say remove carpet but that is not needed. Clean carpet area soaked with carpet cleaner then add vinegar to area and sprinkle baking soda let sit and pat area with dry cloth. Add more Odo ban with drops of oil in machine and continue to clean. Do this process at least 4 times to remove any odor. (Pigs will continue to go in area if the odor lingers)

Urine spots if on floor clean up excess with rags or toweling and use Odo ban or other product mixed 1/2 and half to remove stain and smell. Once cleaned up add few drops oil in water and spray on area then let dry. If being potty trained add another potty box to area and take dirty wet pee rag and toss in box.
