Ingestion of homemade play dough, ornaments, rock salt, or table salt are common issues.
Salt toxicity can be also caused by lack of water for long periods or drinking too much after not having access to water for long periods of time. Outdoor water sources need checked often as they will freeze if not heated or refreshed.
Signs of a pig with toxicity
- thirsty
- constipated
- going around in circles
- running into walls, furniture, etc
- pushing head into corner. Like in timeout for a child but distress/headache
- Seizures, falling, swimming like motion
HAND WARMERS
Iron in large amounts can be toxic. The metals within hand warmers contain amounts of iron that can be toxic to animals if eaten. Iron poisoning can even be lethal if large amounts are consumed.
The level of toxicity from iron depends on how much is ingested the amount in his system. Iron can cause internal bleeding, as it is very corrosive to the lining of the intestines into the stomach
CIGARETTES: Cigarette butts and filters leak nicotine and other harmful chemicals and can poison animals that eat them. ( now and then they will get into things that will make their tummy hurt, giving bread soaked in mineral oil will push most items thru system. When in doubt on what to do call vet ASAP.
COFFEE GROUNDS: high levels of caffeine

ALCOHOL -signs can be lack of coordination, disorientation, large extended tummy : Chemicals used in these products are highly toxic to pigs and pets and can cause internal bleeding, kidney failure, organ damage and even death. CONTACT VET ASAP

Pigs will eat anything they can get into. Some pigs will ignore items others will chew and digest causing problems. Having all items up out of reach for your pig indoors and out is the safest way to avoid any life threatening issues.
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL should only be used with the direction of your vet. Depending on the toxin inducing vomiting can make situation worse

APPLE SEEDS– Seeds are toxic but it takes about a half cup of smashed seeds to do any harm. A few apples here and there are perfectly fine

AUTO PRODUCTS (oils, gas, wash fluid, anti-freeze) or chemicals in yard
ACORNS Green ones are toxic. Pigs can be poisoned by consuming the Oak leaves and bark. Acorns can poison the pigs intestinal tract and kidneys. Small amounts can affect some pigs and to others not effect at all. If you have an abundance in your yard use a acorn roller (amazon) and collect them daily. If your pig has ingested his urine will turn an orange rusty color and will have a tummy ache
- Soap bars contain detergents and can cause tummy irritation, vomiting and diarrhea. Certain soaps are made with glycerin which can also cause loose stools or diarrhea. If issues continue they could lead to dehydration. If a large portion or entire bar of soap was eaten it can also cause a blockage.

CHICKEN FEED can be dangerous if feed contains the ingredient Monessen which is an additive to control Coccidiosis in poultry. Its act as a growth promoter, increased weight gain & fattening purpose for poultry. Poisoning can occur if your poultry feed contains this ingredient. Your pig may be found dead or showing severe neurological sign. There is no treatment available. KEEP ALL FEED OUT OF THE WAY IF UNSURE THIS INGREDIENT IS IN THE FEED
WATER SOFTNER
Salt is used to soften the resin on the water softner, but it doesn’t enter the water supply. The softening process slightly raises the sodium content of the water, but it’s still suitable for drinking and pets.
